Chennai’s Government Museum

Those seeking to better understand the history and culture of India would do well to visit the Government Museum in Chennai. The city is proud to be the capital of Tamil Nadu and works to protect the rich heritage and culture of the Tamil people as well as of India in general.

The Government Museum is a complex of six buildings spread over 16 acres of land. With over forty-five individual galleries, the Government Museum provides a comprehensive exhibition of history, art, and other sciences. Individual collections cover Art, Geology, Archaeology, Botany, Anthropology, Zoology and Numismatics. The complex also houses a Children’s Museum. The collections include paintings, sculpture, textiles, scientific specimens, antiques and other artifacts.

Also known as the National Art Gallery, the museum features a rare collect of Chola bronze works. There are also exhibitions of Mughal and Rajasthan paintings from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries as well as a collection of Deccan paintings from the 17th century. The Gallery has a one-of-a-kind colleciton of Indian handicrafts dating back to the 11th century.

Another museum of interest is the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre which includes Birla Planetarium.

Chennai was formerly known as Madras. The city has lovely beaches, parks and gardens as well as several amusement parks and wildlife preserves and zoos. Visitors will find luxury hotels in Chennai as well as tourist resorts and smaller inns. Shopping is amazing as the city has everything from traditional Tamil crafts to modern electronics.
