New Dehli’s Attractions

As with any naional capital, New Delhi is a center of culture, art, politics, and history. As part of the larger Delhi metropolis, New Delhi draws on both the ancient history and charm of the region as well as the modern development and energy of 21st centuy India.

Once visitors settle on appropriate accommodations (there are a variety of five star hotels in New Delhi as well as boutique hotels, youth hostels, and everything in between), they will want to draw up a plan for exploring the various attractions throughout the area. Be sure to include plenty of time for enjoying the wonderful Punjabi and Mughlai food and for bargain-hunting in the many bazaars and markets throughout the cit.

One of the most popular destinations in the area is the Red Fort. Named for its red sandstone construction, it was completed in 1648 and encompasses a number of palaces and the magnificant Lahore Gate. Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutub Complex are two other monuments that display the grandeur of India’s past.

More modern buildings to visit includ Nehru house, Rashtrapati Bhavan (formerly known as the Viceroy’s House), and Parliment House. The Lotus Temple is one of the more stunning examples of modern spiritual architecture in the world and has become the most visited site in India, surpassing the Taj Mahal. Delhi is also home to the Rajghat Memorial honoring Mahatma Gandhi.
