The Diversity of Leicester
Leicester is one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom, ranks in the top ten as far as population is concerned and is known for their textiles and clothing manufacturing. There are many students in the city, which serves to create a vibrant atmosphere, full of exuberance and a healthy outlook and appreciation for life. Urban reconstruction and renewal has been the focus for the last ten years, and Leicester and its many businesses, retail shops, Leicester hotels, market places and manufacturing centers practice ‘green’ ethos. This city has become known throughout England as the first environmental city in the United Kingdom. Parks and gardens fill the city. So it is one place that is not only ideologically green, but visually green as well.
This is one of the most culturally diverse cities in England due to many aspects of business, tourism, art and culture. As far as business is concerned, Leicester has been making hose for the past 300 years. Pantie hose that is. This simple invention, brought thousands of Asian Immigrants to the city during the big boom in the fashion industry during the 50’s and 60’s, and now fifty years later, over one third of the population is from countries such as Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and China. And among the many street festivals taking place during the year, including the largest which occurs in Notting Hill, is the Afro-Caribbean festival which celebrates rich cultural traditions that include music, art, dancing and food.
And where music is concerned, an international star who became well known for his jazzy tunes during the mid 1960’s, was an ex-ball player, who regularly played on an abandoned bombsite in his youth, Englebert Humperdink. The BBC first broadcast from Leicester, and before becoming the BBC that is known throughout the world today, it was a small station dedicated to adventure and discovery. Beethoven is reported to have given his first live performance in Leicester and the city remains to support all of the art forms, be it music, dance or theater. This city also supports a museum, world renown for housing the largest collection of the works of German Expressionists. Diversity, culture and art has become the reason why so many in the United Kingdom travel to this city, as well as those from other continents.
