Desert Living in Rajasthan
Desert living in Rajasthan creates it’s own little cultural lifestyle from the clothes to the way one socializes. In the heat of the day, long wraps and staying indoors is preferable. Cooking doesn’t happen until the sun set and before sunrise. But enough food is cooked to make up for the time in-between. The cuisine is Indian food with a difference due to the desert climate. Scarcity of water made the use of more milk and buttermilk recipes, and recipes that could last for several days without being heated. A Rajasthan Luxury Hotel will offer you India’s standard cuisine, but I recommend going to a local cafe or street vendor to get a true taste of desert cooking. As for the clothing, men wear turbans and women are dressed in swirling skirts embracing all the colors of the desert and more.
The desert villages are magical and historical and very populated. Way out in the desert you will still find a simple life, you do have to really search for a hamlet or a village that reflects the culture as it was centuries ago. But when you do, you’ll see a collection of huts the are round with thatched roofs. The walls are covered with plaster of clay, hay and dung. Very termite free. The huts are surrounded by simple fencing of shrub and thorn branches to keep the cattle or livestock from wandering off. There are also some fantastic architecture as well, something you’d find in a story book. Some amazing architecture can be found off the beaten path and surprise you that a structure so beautiful could be in the desert. Even the ruins or being restored by world travelers looking for a palace to retire and live in for the rest of their days.
Most people never get to experience the desert and live in lush wet lands and never get to take a breath of pure heat into their lungs, never get to feel the suns heat upon their skin. Don’t be most people, take a Camel tour in Rajasthan to get to these desert villages, wear the local clothing and eat the local food. Spend a night or two out under the stars by a campfire. Stay quiet for a moment and listen to the desert winds tell you a story. Listen for the history to come alive right before you revealing a way of life that is hard but simple. Hard as it is, the desert will keep safe if you respect it’s wisdom.
