Placa Catalunya

The Placa Catalunya is considered to be the center of Barcelona and also the historical origins of the city. It is the meeting point of some of the city’s most famous and important streets, thus representing the heart of the city. The actual area is about 50,000 square meters and is most well known for its beautiful sculptures and fountains. It is also conveniently close to some of Barcelona’s most popular attractions. This makes it an excellent basis for tourists who are staying in luxury Barcelona hotels to plan their site seeing agenda. Another convenient aspect of the Placa is its proximity to some of the best dining options to be found.

The Placa is rich in cultural and artistic relevance. It is full of beautiful statues and sculptures from various avant-garde movements and Neo Classicism. Among some of the more famous sculptures is the Deessa, by Josep Clara and the Pastor de Paul, by Pablo Gargallo. The sculptures of Josep Llimona are also prominent. One of the most intriguing works of art is actually located in the underground. The walls of this historic area are covered in murals that were designed by the students of Escola Massana. The Placa was the major café and hangout location for many of the famous writers and artists that have lived or worked in Barcelona. Most of these cafes haven’t survived to the present time, though this remains an important aspect of the city’s rich history.

Barcelona has a rich theatre scene, and the Placa has been the location of prominent Spanish theatres. Unfortunately some of the most renown stages are no longer in existence, though there are plenty of them in nearby areas. The Teatre del Bon Retir existed in the Placa from 1876 to 1885. The Circ Equestre Algeria was also located here and was active from the years 1879 to 1895. Teatre Barcelona was established in 1923. The arts continue to play an essential role in the lives of Barcelona’s residents and are a major reason the city continues to attract great throngs of tourists every year. Not everyone is there exclusively for the rich cultural history, the beautiful scenic elements and spectacular beaches also play a large role in the city’s popularity.
