History of the Dance Festivals of Singapore

In 1982, a plan was set into order that would bring the world of dance to the people of Singapore. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s the reputation of the festivals brought the dance world into contact with, and then collaboration with the other members of the art community, first with the Asian Performing Arts Festival, and then the all inclusive Festival of Arts, which eventually became what it is today, and event that celebrates all forms of art, visual, performance, and media, which is the annual Singapore Arts Festival. As the years pass, more and more companies around the world are being invited to participate, and one day this may just become and international event, celebrating the art and culture of the world. The international performers and audience have many choices in Singapore luxury hotels, which offer the rest and relaxation from a hard days work.

Previous to 1982, many other countries in the Southeast held annual dance festivals, such as Korea and Indonesia. Upon notice that these events were growing in local popularity and interest, the Ministry of Culture teamed up with the National Theater Trust, and together they proposed the country of Singapore with the idea of creating a festival there. The plans for the first ever festival of dance in Singapore were joyously announced in 1981. The event was to encourage the dancers of Singapore, to provide local platforms enabling them to show their talent in music, dance and choreography. This first festival was held at the Victoria Theater during March of 1982, and was relatively successful in attendance, and very successful in stimulating the artists to create more work, new work. There were no competitions, no awards. This attracted many amateur companies that may have been too intimated by the professional companies otherwise. These festivals have served to not only bring the dance to the public, but to expose the Singaporean artists to the artists of the world.
