For those about to undergo an alcohol abuse intervention the prospect of rehab can look daunting. Yet for those families looking for something which can help makes a twelve step program more enjoyable there is color therapy. Though its name may induce images of new age gimmicks that don’t work, there is copious scientific evidence to suggest otherwise. It is also gaining more popularity addiction treatment centers since its affects have been astoundingly helpful in the recovery of those patients under their care.

Color therapy has its origins all the way from ancient Egypt. The Egyptians believed that Thoth, the god of wisdom, invented it. Even the ancient Grecians found the practice useful. Employing the color of bodily humors, they believed they could discern the temperament of a patient and then provide him with the accurate medicines in forms of oils, minerals, and cloths necessary to balance out the body. Until the Middle Ages, this notion remained in practice.

New discoveries in science helped evolved the method of color therapy during the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Augustus Pleastanton claimed that he found grape size could be increased through the alternation of blue and transparent glass in a greenhouse. Only recently has color therapy started to gain respect among the medical community due to an increased professionalism in testing and procedures. In the fifties, doctors provided studies that showed that jaundice in neonatal babies had successful recovery through sunlight exposure. Back then, the disease was usually fatal and only exacerbated by the condition being found in about two-thirds of babies born prematurely.

But how is color therapy useful to alcoholics? Due to an increase in successful studies, doctors now use a very bright white light, which is a full-spectrum light to help in the treatment of alcohol addiction, in addition to other diseases. Though its origins may have had a dubious past, color therapy can be a helpful addition to suggest to an someone suffering from alcoholism during a treatment for drug addiction. The suggestion can also show how far family and friends are willing to go to help addicts get every kind of supportive treatment available.
