What is art? A dictionary definition may suggest it’s a method or result of arranging elements in a deliberate manner that will be appealing to the senses or emotions. This includes such works as film and literature, music, sculpture, and paintings. A whole philosophical branch is devoted to it: aesthetics. Over the centuries, people have striven for an explanation of what art is and what it does, and many forms and schools of art have been formerly taught. There’s also a branch of art, though, that falls outside of these various schools known as folk art, where the artist is largely unschooled, but gathers his or her training from a community tradition, handed down from generation to generation. But there’s an even more personal art form, outside of traditional custom or training, known as Visionary art, and it’s this type of art that’s celebrated at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

Visionary art is art that’s made by self-taught individuals, without formal training, and whose work comes out of an inner personal vision; in this sense, a pure exploration of the creative act itself. The Visionary Art Museum has dedicated itself to those artists who don’t listen to any other tradition but the one inside their own brain. Perhaps one of the more interesting things about visionary art, considering that it’s so personal and individual-centered, is that the most common theme of the art is that of the Garden of Eden and similar visions of utopia.

If you’re making a trip to Baltimore and plan to stay overnight , you should take a trip to this unusual art museum, which contains over four thousand pieces in the collection, rotating the best works in their Permanent Collection Gallery. Fifty works will be on exhibit at any one time in the permanent collection. It includes work by visionary artists such as Ho Baren, Vollis Simpson, Ben Wilson, as well as forty works from the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre of London .

As part of Lakme Fashion Week, supermodel Naomi Campbell appeared in a special “Mai Mumbai” charity show. The 39-year-old British model walked the catwalk to raise money for Mumbai’s emergency medical services.

Last November Islamic gunmen terrorized the city for three-days, killing 166 people. Attacks focused on some of the city’s most famous landmarks as well as several of Mumbai’s 5 star hotels. The Mumbai court is expected to decide on Monday whether to appoint a state legal aid lawyer for Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only terrorist captured during the attacks. As a foreigner, Kasab may not be entitled to state-sponsored representation.

“Mai Mumbai” was organized by Campbell and Vikram Chatwal, an Indian hotelier. Funds raised will go to Citizens for Justice and Peace as well as ongoing relief programs from victims of the November attacks.

The show featured Indian-inspired fashion by Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, and Carolina Herrera. The designs will be sold in a silent auction and via eBay.

Campbell’s charity, “Fashion for Relief,” was founded in 2005 to organize the fashion community to raise money for victims of natural disasters and other tragedies around the world.

Any single thing that a boutique hotel Singapore has to offer must be over-joyed the day the parade comes to town, the National Day Parade that is. Regardless of the meanderings, the skies of Singapore are lit up with a spectacular show of fireworks. Dragons, and Wayang characters stroll the streets. A grand scale of a party, much to rival the New Year’s Eve party in Manhattan’s Time square, therichshaws are riding and the people are celebrating. Aurora Borealis of nights is what occurs during this most attended and most popular of street festivals. Miss Thailand makes and appearance, giving the wave from her float, the beauty queen wave. The style of the night is to be decked out in the most glamorous of fashions. DJs spin popular dance tunes, such as those sung by Singapore’s very own Stefanie Sun, and people revel in the beaty and freedom of what it is to be alive. This annual January happening began as a simple and small neighborhood ordeal, but has grown in popularity and strength and meaning and feeling. It is their ‘4th of July’. Bless their little hearts and may those little hearts keep on beating.

A friend of mine got a tattoo the other day and I went with him. I like to go to the tattoo parlors even though I don’t have any myself. We spent a lot of time looking at tattoo designs before he decided on flames going up his arm.

What I thought was so interesting were the black light tattoos. Apparently they glow under a black light. I think this would freak me out if I just saw someone glowing under a black light. How weird would that be?

Anyway, my friend’s tattoo looked great. I think he might even start apprenticing as a tattoo artist. He asked a million questions and even asked about the tattoo machine that the guy was using.
