  • Practice Gun Safety

Cliched as it sounds, owning a gun is a serious responsibility. Most gun collectors and hunters with large caches of guns will attest to the importance of learning — and practicing — basic gun safety at all times. New gun owners in particular need to devote a considerable amount of time to acquiring good habits with regards to their firearms.

To start off, they need to make sure they have received proper instruction in both firing and cleaning their weapon. Practice improves aim and reduces the chances of collateral damage when a gun is fired. Also, a dirty gun is much more likely to misfire, resulting in injuries or even death. Proper handling of a gun also includes knowing how to load the gun, how to safely store ammo, and how to use the safety lock.

Responsible gun owners teach their families about gun safety in order to reduce the chance of curious children playing with weapons. They invest in gun safes and make sure that they secure their guns when not in use. The best way to teach children to have a healthy respect for firearms is to demonstrate that same respect at all times. Staying alert, developing good habits, and practicing gun safety at all times will go a long way to preventing any mishaps.
